Pigeon Religion follows eight New Yorkers whose lives revolve around a bird the city has long overlooked. Among an estimated five million pigeons, these caretakers, hustlers, and flyers have spent years turning birds into athletes, muses, and spiritual lifelines. Through their parallel stories, the film confronts the high-stakes drama of the auction floor, the cost of devotion, and the defiance in finding beauty in what the world considers trash.
Performer
Mother Pigeon's Revival
Tina Piña, better known as Mother Pigeon, is a New York City Artist, street performer, and animal rights advocate. In her studio in Bushwick Brooklyn, Mother Pigeon handcrafts lifelike soft sculptures of pigeons, rats, and other urban wildlife, using fabric and recycled materials.
Her goal is to shift negative perceptions of urban animals. In parks and sidewalks around the city, Mother Pigeon showcases her handmade art while dressed in her signature feathered outfit. Some observers are initially fooled, mistaking her soft sculptures for real animals.
In addition to her art, she cares for a flock of nearly 300 pigeons in different areas of NYC, extending her advocacy into her daily life. She also authored (along with Jason Trachtenburg) and illustrated "Hi, I'm Mother Pigeon," a children's book introducing her world of urban wildlife. Through her performances, art, and writing, Mother Pigeon elevates the reputation of pigeons, rats, and other misunderstood creatures in the city.
