We’ve made it to the end and the feeling is bittersweet! Let’s bid farewell to the summer and another incredible Rooftop season with a captivating finale of our favorite short films. This collection of stories plumbs the depths of the human experience, the familiar and uncanny, through a variety of thought-provoking perspectives. A sailor is propelled through the air and comes to grapple with his place in the world, a young football player navigates the twisted landscape of his own mind after a brutal injury, a woman confined to her apartment grows increasingly agitated. Our last program of films invites us to reflect on not only our own lives, but the lives of those around us as well.
The Films
as time passes
Jamil McGinnis | US | 15
Through journal entries, a mother’s words, neighborhood stories, and existential inquiries; one still searches for meaning beyond the walls of ones mind.
The Devil (Diabeł)
Jan Bujnowski | Poland | 19
In research on the religiosity of Poles conducted in the 1990s by OBOP, the percentage of believers has always fluctuated around 95%. At the same time, the unemployment rates also reached record values. The crisis strengthened the society's need for spirituality, which allowed things not necessarily possible to happen in other times.
End Zone
Guy Kozak | US | 9
Youth football player #13 lies unconscious after a brutal in-game collision. While a medical crew begins emergency procedures, the boy descends into a menacing odyssey through his own mind. As he plunges deeper into his subconscious, fantasy and reality coalesce into an operatic fever dream.
The Flying Sailor
Amanda Forbis & Wendy Tilby | Canada | 8
A sailor takes a sudden and unexpected voyage.
Garrano
David Doutel & Vasco Sá | Portugal, Lithuania | 14
A Garrano horse is forced to pull a heavy load under a blazing sun; young boy Joel discovers a man who is about to set a forest on fire.
Headprickles
Katarzyna Miechowicz | Poland | 8
A film inspired by the absurdity of everyday life.
Misaligned
Marta Magnuska | Poland | 7
The woman and the man are in a room, a gecko sits in a terrarium, several flies are circling a lamp. Gradually we find more and more dependencies and analogies between their activities and observed elements as the rhythm of their universes accelerates. The microcosms shown seem to interact rhythmically and belong to some cosmic order.
