ROOFTOP FILMS ANNOUNCES FILM SLATE FOR 2023 ANNUAL SUMMER SERIES IN NYC, PRESENTED BY AMC NETWORKS
BROOKLYN, NY (May 4, 2023) – Rooftop Films, the non-profit organization celebrated as New York City’s home for independent films and filmmakers, is proud to announce the lineup for its annual Rooftop Films Summer Series, one of the longest running and largest outdoor showcases for independent film in the world. Following tradition, Rooftop Films will kick off its 27th Summer Series on Thursday, May 25th at Green-Wood Cemetery with a night of music, community, and an exciting collection of some of the best new short films of the year.
The Summer Series–Rooftop’s signature program–is a one-of-a-kind, summer-long, outdoor film festival showcasing the best new independent films in iconic locations across New York City’s five boroughs. Each screening is distinctly unique and features electric live performances, free afterparties, and Q&As with filmmakers and stars. Since its inception, Rooftop has set out to engage and inspire diverse communities by showcasing the work of burgeoning filmmakers, supporting them throughout their production, bringing NYC communities together, and more.
This year’s Summer Series will run from May 25th through August 24th and will include over 45 events featuring new independent feature films, short film programs, and live performances, expecting to attract over 45,000 attendees. Programming highlights include:
- This is What We Mean by Short Films: Opening Night 2023 on Thursday, May 25th at Green-Wood Cemetery, featuring live pre-show music, some of the best new short films of the year, filmmaker Q&As, and an after-party
- The New York premieres of several of 2023’s most anticipated films including Eva Longoria’s directorial debut Flamin’ Hot (Searchlight Pictures), and Laura McGann’s The Deepest Breath (dir. Laura McGann, Netflix), both screening for free on the pier at Brooklyn Army Terminal; Chris Smith’s WHAM!; HBO Documentary Films’ The Stroll, featuring in-person introductions from directors Kristen Lovell & Zackary Drucker and the film’s subjects at Gansevoort Plaza, co-presented by NewFest as Closing Night of their 3rd Annual NewFest Pride; Savanah Leaf’s critically acclaimed directorial debut, Earth Mama (A24), starring Tia Nomore, Erika Alexander, and Doechii; and Bill Pohlad’s Dreamin’ Wild (Roadside Attractions), starring Casey Affleck, Walton Goggins, and Zooey Deschanel
- A spectacular New York premiere for Christopher Sharp & Moses Bwayo’s Bobi Wine: The People’s President from National Geographic Documentary Films at Capital One City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage. The film will be preceded by a live musical performance by Bobi Wine, the afro-pop star who led a presidential campaign seeking to unseat Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda for more than 35 years

For the seventh consecutive year, the Rooftop Films Summer Series will be presented by AMC Networks and its family of iconic fan-favorite brands. Additionally, Rooftop’s exclusive spirit sponsor Bulleit Frontier Whiskey will present more than 20 pre- and post-screening receptions throughout the summer.

Tickets for select upcoming screenings are on sale now via the Rooftop Films website, with additional dates and tickets to be released in the coming weeks.
Additionally, three Rooftop Films screenings will be free to members as part of the Rooftop Films Selects Membership Screening Series. For first-access to events, memberships are available at www.rooftopfilms.com/memberships.
In addition to presenting amazing films, Rooftop Films is also known for their scenic and unique outdoor venues. 2023 venue partners will include the pier of Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park, which will host free screenings all summer long, including the NY premiere of Flamin’ Hot, with support from New York City Economic Development Corporation; four free events will take place at Brooklyn Commons, co-presented by Brookfield; six free screenings will be presented in Fort Greene Park in partnership with the Fort Greene Park Conservancy; Industry City will co-present two free screenings in their courtyard in Brooklyn; and, for the first time this summer, Rooftop Films will present free screenings in Gansevoort Plaza in partnership with the Meatpacking District. Rooftop will also return to many of our beloved, long-standing venues across the city for ticketed events.
