SHORT CUTS: The Mystery of Flying Kicks (From the Director of Sam Klemke’s Time Machine)

It’s a sight we’re all familiar with. Even so, seeing shoes hanging from telephone wires provokes questions. How did they get up there? Who threw them? But most of all–why?

In this week’s Short Cut, Sam Klemke’s Time Machine director Matthew Bate pursues this perplexing “why.” He opened up a free phone hotline and encouraged people to call in to propose “shoe tossing” origin stories, which he then compiled in his 2010 short The Mystery of Flying Kicks. You can watch the short, a Vimeo Staff Pick, below, but don’t expect a definitive answer on the matter. The eclectic variety of theories is much more fun than that.
