Ep 221: Brian Knappenberger • Doug Block

[powerpress]

Two extraordinary documentary filmmakers appear on this episode of Filmwax Radio: Brian Knappenberger (We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists) with his new film, The Internet’s Own Boy; and Doug Block (51 Birch Street) with his long anticipated 112 Weddings.

Brian Knappenberger follows up his very popular documentary feature, We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists, with the story of the information activist, Aaron Swartz. Aaron was an amazing human being whose fingerprint can be found all over the internet. His amazing life was unfortunately cut short by his suicide at the age of 26 . The film had its world premiere at Sundance this year and opens in theaters and on demand on June 27th. Knappenberger is something of an activist himself and we end the conversation talking about the very germain subject of net neutrality, something that is very much on both our minds.

I am extremely pleased to welcome my friend, documentary filmmaker, Doug Block to the episode’s second segment. Doug has made a number of personal documentaries including 51 Birch Street and The Kids Grow Up. Doug is back with a new film which takes great advantage of his having been a wedding videographer for the past couple of decades. Doug goes back and visits nine of the couples who were his clients and sees how they are doing. It’s a deceptively simple concept that is both highly entertaining and unexpectedly powerful. There are many unforgettable moments to say the least. 112 Weddings is having its broadcast premiere on HBO on Monday, June 30th; there will be no theatrical in the Sates.
