Flicks on the Beach returns to Coney Island #ConeyComeBack

The newly-formed Alliance for Coney Island, charged with developing programming for the historic amusement area, announces this year’s 2013 Flicks on the Beach movie line-up. Flicks on the Beach, programmed by the Alliance for Coney Island in partnership with Rooftop Films and NYC & Co., is set to begin on July 1st, featuring free movies every Monday for eight consecutive weeks.

Marked as the official #ConeyComeback, the iconic “Peoples Playground” prepares to welcome thousands of visitors to the official start of the summer season – Memorial Day weekend. Featuring its historic landmark attractions, and inaugurating brand new concessions, Coney Island guarantees a season jam-packed with plenty of thrills and surprises, reestablishing the seaside amusement area as a must-see destination for all New Yorkers and visitors alike.

The series, now in its third year, screens movies on the Coney Island Beach near West 10th St. This year’s movie line-up includes many classics and crowd favorites.  We are excited to kickoff the series with Little Fugitive, the Brooklyn classic, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a homecoming Coney Island screening.  The screening will be presented in conjunction with Artists Public Domain/Cinema Conservancy Releasing, and introduced by Mary Engel, daughter of directors Engel and Orkin.  The perfect Brooklyn summer film – fun for the whole family, and we mean it!

  • July 1st: Little Fugitive, 60th Anniversary
  • July 8th: Bending Steel, in partnership with the Tribeca Film Festival
  • July 15th: The Hunger Games
  • July 22nd: Wreck it Ralph
  • July 29th: Men in Black III
  • August 5th: The Avengers
  • August 12th: Fame
  • August 19th: To Be Announced!

Since Superstorm Sandy, the Alliance for Coney Island has worked closely with area stakeholders and received immeasurable support from local officials, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and nonprofit organizations supporting recovery efforts in Coney Island.

The #ConeyComeback also includes newly renovated concessions on the Boardwalk, such as Paul’s Daughter, Coney’s Cones, Nathan’s Famous (boardwalk location), Brooklyn Beach Shop, Lola Star, Ruby’s Bar & Grill, Tom’s Restaurant and the recently-inaugurated Place To Beach Bar and Grill, each offering tasty concessions and Coney Island themed souvenirs.

“I am delighted to see activities in Coney Island roaring back in time for the warm weather. As a community, we must acknowledge that much work remains to fully recover from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy; these events signal a big step in the right direction. The Alliance is an essential player in restoring the economic engine that is Coney Island and I look forward to the days ahead”, said Councilmember Domenic M. Recchia, Jr.
