YouTube and Landlines

Nine Things I’ve learned from my first time putting a film on YouTube

  1. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people will see your film. Way more people than you’d ever get by just playing the festival circuit. It’s completely terrifying and pretty fucking cool.
  2. We will not be winning an Oscar as reported by the LA Times today. Luckily, the thought of winning an Oscar never crossed my mind, so I think we’re okay.
  3. Our film creates a very intense and heated debate.
  4. All the YouTube comments are emailed to my inbox. So one minute I’m all, “Aw people think it’s good!” and the next minute I’m all, “Why are they so mean?”
  5. Haters gonna hate, man. And sometimes with bad grammar and spelling errors.
  6. People from all over the world reach out over twitter, facebook and email with the kindest, sweetest notes that make me cry. “Thank you Cody from Alaska.”
  7. People want to see more.
  8. My favorite comment so far on YouTube, “Who uses landlines anymore?” And my response to that comment … “Landline Candler does, buddy. Landline Candler does.”
  9. People really, really, really, really love movies about cats. But I really liked that one too.
