Oscar Predictions

The Superbowl for movie nerds is coming up and while I have no idea what went on this weekend in Indiana, I have plenty of ideas about what I think will go on at this year’s Oscars (February 26). Predicts below:

Best Actor (Leading Role)
Nominees: Demian Bichir (A Better Life), George Clooney (The Descandants), Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Brad Pitt (Moneyball)
For the Win: Clooney. Given a chance to maximize Clooney-in-a-tux-on-television-time, Oscar voters aren’t dummies.

Best Actress (Leading Role)
Nominees: Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Viola Davis (The Help), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn)
For the Win: Meryl Streep is the Meryl Streep of acting.

Best Actor (Supporting)
Nominees: Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn), Jonah Hill (Moneyball), Nick Nolte (Warrior), Christopher Plummer (Beginners), Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close)
For the Win: Uggie, the adorable dog from The Artist (write-ins count at the Oscars, right?)

Best Actress (Supporting)
Nominees: Bérénice Bejo (The Artist), Jessica Chastain (The Help), Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs), Octavia Spencer (The Help)
For the Win: Octavia Spencer

Best Screenplay (Adapted)
Nominees: The Descendants, Hugo, The Ides of March, Moneyball, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
For the Win: The Descendants (Yay! I can’t wait to see the Dean from Community accept an Oscar)

Best Screenplay (Original)
Nominees: The Artist, Bridesmaids, Margin Call, Midnight in Paris, A Seperation
For the Win: The Artist

Best Director
Nominees: Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), The Descendants (Alexander Payne), Hugo (Martin Scorsese), Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen), The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick)
For the Win: Payne or Hazanavicius

Best Picture:
Nominees: The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, War Horse
For the Win: The Artist or The Descendants… and I wouldn’t mind seeing Clooney or Uggie give an acceptance speech, so this is really a win either way.
