Rooftop’s Dan Nuxoll Moderates Flaherty NYC Screening

The Flaherty is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the proposition that independent media can illuminate the human spirit. Its mission is to foster exploration, dialogue, and introspection about the art and craft of all forms of the moving image.

As a part of that mission, the Flaherty presents monthly screening events, showing films and hosting discussions around relevant social issues. This month’s screening event will feature the film Reporter, directed by Eric Daniel Metzgar, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, moderated by Rooftop Program Director Dan Nuxoll.

The screening will take place Monday, December 13 at 7:30 pm at the Anthology Film Archives (32 Second Ave. at 2nd St.) Tickets are $9 ($6 for Anthology members), and are available at the door the night of the screening.

Reporter is an unforgettable portrait of New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, who almost single-handedly sounded the alarm call for the world about genocide in Darfur.  Reporter follows Kristof on a harrowing trip to Congo, where a decade of instability and warfare has left 5.4 million innocent people dead of starvation, disease, and violence.  Reporter introduces us to some of those people, and some of the warlords responsible.  Marked by Metzgar’s stunning cinematography and thoughtful first person narration, Reporter elevates our understanding of what it makes to look at human suffering while pondering the future of journalism, the psychology of compassion, and the ethical responsibilities of the documentarian.

Flaherty NYC is programmed by Rooftop Alum Penny Lane, an independent filmmaker, video artist, educator and writer.

After the show, head over to The Scratcher (209 E. 5th St.) for happy hour prices on beer and cocktails, where the conversation can continue in a more relaxed environment.

General admission tickets to the Flaherty NYC series at the Anthology Film Archives are $9, and $6 for Anthology members. Tickets can be purchased at the Anthology box office the day of the show.

Anthology Film Archives is located in the old Second Avenue Courthouse building in the East Village at 32 Second Ave. at the corner of 2nd Street. For subway take F, V to Second Ave., B, D, F, V to Broadway-Lafayette, 6 to Bleecker.
