Rooftop Films will be screening the classic musical Fame for the seventh week of Flicks on the Beach, presented in partnership with the Alliance for Coney Island and NYC & Co. This eight-week series aims to promote a #ConeyComeback after the devastating effects of Superstorm Sandy, and to foster community arts and entertainment in the iconic Brooklyn neighborhood.

The film follows students and teachers alike from freshman year to graduation at the public NYC High School for Music Arts, the place of learning for some of the most talented aspiring artists, musicians and actors. You’ll be singing and dancing along to the impressive vocal stylings of the Fame cast!

ROOFTOP FILMS: Fame

Venue: On the beach at Coney Island

Address: 3059 West 12th Street, Brooklyn, NY

7:30PM: Pre-show entertainment

Sundown: Film begins

“Fame is set at New York’s High School of Performing Arts, where talented teens train for show-business careers. The film concentrates on five of the most gifted students: singer Irene Cara, actors Paul McCrane and Barry Miller, dancer Gene Anthony Ray, and musician Lee Currieri. More so than the subsequent TV series Fame, the film emphasizes the importance of keeping up one’s academic achievements in this specialized school. The faculty includes no-nonsense English teacher Ann Meara, erudite musical instructor Albert Hague, and martinet dance teacher Debbie Allen. Of the film’s cast, Ray, Currieri, Allen and Hague were carried over to the TV version of Fame, which premiered in 1981. The score for the film version of Fame was honored with an Academy Award.” (c) Hal Erickson, Rovi
