Acclaimed independent filmmaker, Byron Hurt, has dedicated his work to spreading messages of health and social activism specifically in the African American community. In 2007, Rooftop teamed up with the National Black Programmers Consortium in showing Hurt’s “Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in on Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture”, so this go ’round we got to give a shout out to this extraordinary filmmaker’s latest project. Next week, Hurt’s newest film Soul Food Junkies will make its world premiere in Miami, Florida during the American Black Film Festival. It will be screening twice, Thursday June 21 at 3:05 p.m. and Saturday June 23 at 10 a.m. Chosen with only three other films, Soul Food Junkies will be competing in the festival’s competition for best documentary.

Also on Thursday June 21, Soul Food Junkies be shown in Oakland, California at the Oakland Innovation Film Lab at 7:00 PM and finally, in New York with ImageNation at the Lincoln Center on Thursday August 30. With films like these, we encourage all friends and family to not only attend, but spread the word to others–whether in Florida, Cali, or NYC!

Lastly, it is our pleasure to announce that the Television Critics Association (TCA) has chosen Soul Food Junkies to take part in its press tour on July 21 in Los Angeles in the Beverly Hills Hilton! With the company of all the largest broadcasting networks and over 200 writers and television journalists, Soul Food Junkies, we hope, will be a film that you will be hearing much more about in the future… so be sure to keep a lookout!
