Andy Berends is a daring and very smart filmmaker, as well as a Rooftop alum (We showed his feature When Adnan Comes Home back in 2007). His latest project looks fantastic, so take a look at his trailer and help him finish his film!

The director describes his latest work, Delta Boys, as a “film about the human cost of the world’s unquenchable thirst for cheap oil.” Though Nigera is the 5th largest supplier of oil to the US, the area’s inhabitants continue to live in extreme poverty while their resources are drilled out from under them. Berends film goes beyond a simple exposé. In order to make the film he immersed himself among one of the region’s militant groups, and asked them to share their stories. The group is united by their desire to take back pillaged land, and demand support from their government, using guerilla tactics to fight against foreign oil companies. He became so incorporated into the group that he was eventually arrested and detained by the Nigerian government in order to suppress media coverage of the conflict.

The film has received support from The Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, Cinereach and The Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund. With only 15 days to go, the project is just a bit over $5000 short of being funded! If you enjoyed When Adnan Comes Home, just a $100 contribution will buy you a copy of that film as well as the rest of Berend’s filmography. Head over to Kickstarter now to support Berend’s daring film, one that will serve an important reminder of the unseen human cost of the world’s oil supply.
