The EPIX Movie Free-For-All concludes its summer screenings on Saturday, Sept. 17, with a free showing of “Moonstruck” at Coney Island in conjunction with Verizon Fios and Coney Island Flicks on the Beach.

Widow Loretta Castorini (Cher) accepts her boyfriend’s marriage proposal, and then promptly falls in love with his brother (Nicolas Cage). Seems straightforward enough, until you factor in the power of the full moon. Cher, Olympia Dukakis and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley all took home Oscars for this charmed comedy that’s so much more than the four seconds we see in every rom-com montage-although truth be told, Cher’s delivery of “snap out of it!” never gets old.

Starting at 5pm there will be live music courtesy of The Coney Island Dancers, with the screening of a short film following. This week Rooftop will be presenting Elena Greenlee’s Mariachi; a film about Carlos, a local teen struggling to carve out his identity somewhere between his Mexican-born parents and his Brooklyn-bred peers. An unexpected accident and an ensuing immigration investigation force him into uncharted territory, further from home and closer to finding himself.

Date: Sept 17
Venue: On the Beach at Coney Island. W 12th and the beach, right near Luna Park.
Train: Take the F train to Coney Island, walk to the beach and make a left.
8:00 PM Rooftop Films presents Mirachi
8:10 PM Moonstruck
No admission charge.

  1. This makes me this of the movie ‘On the Waterfront’ when the villain figures out that she can no longer exist with the pain of future heartbreak.
