Boldly going where no “Trek” has gone before, this 2009 reboot of the 40-year-old sci-fi franchise tells the origin stories of the beloved crew of the Starship Enterprise. “Star Trekis the 11th film based on the original Star Trek television series, but portrayed by an all-new cast.

Re-imagining a cult classic of super-nova proportions is as dangerous as a Klingon with a painstik, but director J.J. Abrams (creator of “Alias” and “Lost“) manages to re-energize the franchise with enough snappy dialogue, twists, and special effects to satisfy even the most nitpicky space-geek. Not surprisingly, the film was nominated for four Oscars at the 82nd Academy Awards, and has become the highest-grossing film in the entire series.

And now, EPIX Movie Free-For-All brings it to you on Thursday, July 21, only at Tompkins Square Park in the East Village. Under the stars with fellow fans, follow Spock, McCoy, Sulu, and the entire galactic gang as they combat an evil, time-traveling Romulan (Eric Bana) hell-bent on destroying the Federation.

In partnership with Verizon Fios, EPIX has expanded to a series of 32 free, outdoor movie screenings in four parks in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Tompkins Square Park screenings will continue every Thursday night through the end of August, with classic and must-see films like “Rosemary’s Baby“, “The Pope of Greenwich Village“, and “The Godfather“. Every event will also open with live music at 7:45pm so be sure to come early. And the out-of-this world bonus – it’s completely for free.

I am kind of ashamed to admit that I have never been to an outdoor NYC movie and I think it is high time I attend. I don’t know about Star Trek, but I will have to catch one in the very near future
