After Mark Hogancamp is brutally beaten outside a bar, he somehow survives, emerging from a coma only to be greeted by memory loss and brain damage. Unable to afford conventional therapy, he creates his own, in the form of a 1/16 scale WWII era town in his back yard.

This is Marwencol, populated by painstakingly realistic dolls representing his friends, family, and attackers. Here Mark unravels his demons by acting out and photographing elaborate stories involving archetypal representations of the people and forces at play in his real life. In these scenes, his fighter pilot alter ego always wins the battle of Good versus Evil.

But when the beautiful and haunting photographs of his meticulous world start getting noticed by the art world, Mark is faced with a choice: stay in the fantasy that has been his salvation or join the outside world he has worked hard to avoid.

Filmmaker Jeff Malmberg‘s skillful visual storytelling weaves us between Mark’s two realities, creating a wonderfully eerie and memorable film that places its audience at the heart of the tension between the two poles of Mark’s world.

Rooftop presented a screening of Marwencol at Toronto’s Hot Docs Festival this past May, and the film has won numerous awards and accolades, including the South by Southwest Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary and being named one of the 5 “must-see” films of October by indieWIRE.

Now New Yorkers have a chance to see this remarkable film when it opens at the IFC Center Friday, October 8th.
