Rooftop Films is excited to announce  that we are partnering with the L Magazine for a special screening as part of Northside Film, a new addition to the second annual Northside Festival taking place June 24-27. There will be screenings each night of the festival at indieScreen, a new 100-capacity art-house movie theater meets music venue meets restaurant and bar opening on Kent Ave and S 2nd St in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

This Sunday, June 27, Rooftop will present a special program of shorts as part of the festival.

And what’s more, we’re giving away two pairs of tickets to Sunday’s show for FREE! Just email northsidetix@rooftopfilms.com to enter.

The screening will feature short films from some of the most exciting New York based filmmakers around, many of whom will be at the show for a Q&A after the screening. The Films include a short about the infamous Hair Man of Williamsburg, and an abortion comedy with SNL cast member Jenny Slate. But don’t worry, if you don’t win, tickets are $9 online or at the door. Tickets and more information here.

The Films:

THE TERRIBLE THING OF ALPHA-9! (Jake Armstrong | Brooklyn, NY | 5:45 min.)
A space bounty hunter travels to a lonely planet to kill a terrible monster. jakehatesyou.blogspot.com

OPEN HOUSE (Diane Nerwen | Brooklyn, NY | 31 min.)
Readily visible under the thin veneer of real estate ads pushing Brooklyn’s future as a destination for the moneyed, yet “hip,” classes is an urban renewal project on a scale not seen since Robert Moses’ “slum” clearance of the 1960’s. With images of a neighborhood being literally torn apart by outside developers capitalizing on a frenzied housing market, and locals under pressure to “sell out” while the price is right, this work documents aspects of an incredible drama that has been woefully underreported in the mainstream media. -Peter Scott on dianenerwen.com

HAIR MAN (Zach Timm & Matthew Rivera | New York, NY | 3:19 min.)
There is no place to hide for the Mystery Hair Man of Williamsburg. They – or we – are watching his every move. aligned-creative.com

LEDO AND IX GO TO TOWN (Emily Carmichael | Brooklyn, NY | 7:45 min.)
What exactly do video game characters do when we’re not around? What if they chat and bicker like we do, wonder and dream like we do, feel boredom and dread like we do, despite being 48 pixels tall? An eight-bit tribute to Waiting for Godot, Carmichael returns to Rooftop with another film in the Ledo and Ix series, using the visual vocabulary of retro video games to explore the human fear of both the unknown and the known. kidcandrive.com

SEED (Ben Richardson | Brooklyn, NY | 12 min.)
An egg and an apple build competing broadcast towers that vie for the attention of a transistor radio. With its complex characterization and narrative of animal evolution, competition and reproduction, Seed is a beautiful and sinister stop-motion story about the struggle to survive. seed-movie.com

OBVIOUS CHILD (Gillian Robespierre | Brooklyn, NY | 23 min.)
A romantic comedy about an unplanned pregnancy, an abortion, and a great first date in an unlikely location. gillianrobespierre.com

GAYBY (Jonathan Lisecki | Brooklyn, NY | 12 min.)
Jenn (Jenn Harris) and Matt (Matthew Wilkas) are best friends from college who are now in their 30s. Lately, their relationship has dwindled to the occasional social-networking exchange. In an effort to “reconnect,” they decide to have a baby together, taking the easiest, cheapest route of just having sex–even though Matt is gay and Jenn is straight.

SINKHOLE (Eric Scherbarth | New York, NY | 13 min.)
A salesman approaches a mysterious landowner with an offer to buy the man’s smoldering abandoned coalmines but finds that there is more at stake than the land.
