Celebrate the opening of our 20th festival with dark, oddball comedies and exhilarating documentary experiences

Featuring robots singing Carmina Burana, a rapid-fire tour of the NY subway system, and a four-part comedy symphony by Steve Collins (one of the first directors to show at Rooftop), this exciting slate of films celebrates everything you’ve come to love about the films that populate Rooftop’s shorts programs. We can’t think of a better way to start our 20th festival!

THE FILMS

Stations (Roddy Hyduk | USA | 2 min.)
Stations is a conceptual documentary about the New York City subway. Representing over 100 subway stations across all 5 boroughs, the film aims to present the unique texture of NYC in a new and compelling way.

The Position (Black Eye Symphony pt. 1) (Steve Collins | USA | 5 min.)
A series of thematically interrelated shorts by Rooftop super-alum Steve Collins and starring Rooftop super-alums John Merriman and Paul Gordon.

MeTube 2: August Sings Carmina Burana (Daniel Moshel | Austria | 5 min.)
After Elfie and her nerdy son August successfully proved themselves on their home webcam in MeTube 1, the odd pair venture onto the street to present the biggest, boldest, and sexiest operatic flash mob the internet has ever witnessed!

Avant Garde (Black Eye Symphony pt. 3) (Steve Collins | USA | 4 min.)
A series of thematically interrelated shorts by Rooftop super-alum Steve Collins and starring Rooftop super-alums John Merriman and Paul Gordon.

Temporary Color (John Wilson | USA | 13 min.)
A filmmaker is hired to shoot a documentary about a David Byrne concert and finds a much more competent crew making their own film. Their tour ends up following the route of two escaped convicts and threatens the lives of the entire crew.

Thunder P. (Black Eye Symphony Pt. 4) (Steve Collins | USA | 3 min.)
A series of thematically interrelated shorts by Rooftop super-alum Steve Collins and starring Rooftop super-alums John Merriman and Paul Gordon.

The Hanging (Geoffrey Feinberg | USA | 15 min.)
19 year old Kirill is fearless. A leading figure in Moscow’s ‘roofing’ subculture, he lives a carefree existence, breaking into buildings and hanging out on rooftops with his friends. His brazen stunts on top of the buildings have earned him the nickname ‘Russian Spiderman.’ Having dropped out of Russia’s top engineering university, he see’s in the freedom of roofing a way to find himself. However, dropping out has unintended consequences and he is soon confronted with the one thing he does fear.

Mining Poems or Odes (Callum Rice | UK | 11 min.)
Robert, an ex-shipyard welder from Govan, Glasgow, reflects on how his life experiences have influenced his newfound compulsion to write.

An Ecstatic Experience (Ja'Tovia Gary | USA | 6 min.)
An invocation and a meditation on transcendence as a means of restoration and resistance.

Bad at Dancing (Joanna Arnow | USA | 11 min.)
A perpetually awkward third wheel, Joanna inserts herself into the relationship of her more charismatic roommate Isabel. The mismatched threesome becomes increasingly contentious as the characters vie for control. With darkly comedic tones, Bad at Dancing examines the leader-follower dynamic of the two friends – their jealous rivalry plays out in the film's surreal world of singing, dancing and sex.

Dr. Meertz (Black Eye Symphony pt. 5) (Steve Collins | USA | 5 min.)
John visits a psychiatrist who engages him in a therapy session in the waiting room. A series of thematically interrelated shorts by Rooftop super-alum Steve Collins and starring Rooftop super-alums John Merriman and Paul Gordon.

Thunder Road (Jim Cummings | USA | 13 min.)
Officer Arnaud loved his mom.

MUSIC

The She-Devils
The She-Devils are Canadian duo Kyle Jukka and Audrey Ann. Their sound is poetic and experimental, as if all the pop of the last half century had been put in a shaker and then shaken to death.
