Sean Baker’s rowdy tale of a transgender prostitute searching for the pimp who broke her heart

Tangerine (Sean Baker | USA | 88 min.)
Shot entirely on an iPhone 5S, Sean Baker's big-hearted third feature film is an innovative, confident, and highly affecting piece of filmmaking, sure to change the way we think about movies in the context of our rapidly shifting cinematic landscape. Set in sun-blistered streets of Los Angeles, Tangerine follows Sin-Dee (the extraordinary Kiki Kitana Rodriguez), a transgender woman prowling Hollywood on Christmas Eve in search of the pimp who left her heartbroken.

Stripped down, yet technically unprecedented, the film confidently tackles issues of sex, gender and race with comic exuberance and self-assurance. From Tangerine's electric opening moments to its bittersweet finale, the Trans sub-culture is rendered relatable, universal, palpable and personal, and further establishes Sean Baker as a talented young filmmaker with plenty of guts and a lot imagination.

In theaters July 10th, 2015.
