Francis is an award winning writer and director who was brought up on his parents' farm on the Pennine Hills in Yorkshire, UK. After training as an actor at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama graduating in 1992, Francis has performed extensively in theatre, television and film. Francis wrote his first short film Bantam in 2009 which was commissioned and funded by North West Vision and the UK Film Council under the Digi-shorts scheme. The Farmer's Wife was Francis' directorial début in 2011. Bradford-Halifax-London, which had its premier in November 2013, is Francis' second film as director and writer. He is in development on his first feature film God's Own Country due to shoot Spring 2015 in Yorkshire.
