Newlyweeds (Shaka King | New York, NY | 90 min.)

Winner of the Rooftop Films and Edgeworx Studios Post-Production Grant, Shaka King’s feature film debut is an insightful dark comedy about love and marijuana. Lyle works as a repo man, delivering some of the funniest and most serious scenes in the film. Nina is a free spirit and an occasional baker who decides to work at a children’s museum in order to save money for a trip to the Galapagos. And the only thing that keeps them both sane is smoking pot.

However, the high times start to become low for the couple when Nina’s 420-friendly boss smokes up all their good stuff. Subsequently, their easy-going relationship goes up in smoke. Lyle’s life takes a hit after he blows Nina off to get high with his co-worker. And while pot never seemed to ruin him, Lyle seems to have a drinking problem--after accidentally drinking liquor, he spirals even further out of control. Will their love for each other and Mary Jane survive?

Don’t let the title fool you, Newlyweeds is a sophisticated stoner romantic comedy, a rare film that graciously walks the fine line between the ills and the humor of chemical dependency. The film boasts amazing performances from co-leads Amari Cheatom -- known for his role in Night Catches Us -- and newcomer Trae Harris, plus cameos from The Wire veterans Hassan Johnson and Isiah Whitlock, Jr.

Newlyweeds received a great response from this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was quickly picked up for distribution from Phase 4 Films for release later this summer. We are proud to screen Newlyweeds on our new open-air rooftop at the Trilok Community Center in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, not far from where the movie was filmed.
