Rooftop Films

Audio/Visual technicians transport, install, operate, and troubleshoot audio, visual, and lighting equipment for Rooftop Films' Summer Series outdoor screenings. Technicians work shows from start to finish, meeting at our offices in Gowanus, Brooklyn for load-out and transportation of equipment to the site for setup, concluding with load-in at the end of the night.

Technicians can expect to work between 25 and 40 hours per week from mid-May through August, and excellent technicians may have the opportunity to work through the winter. Compensation ranges from $15-$20 per hour and is commensurate with experience.


+ Familiarity with professional audio/visual technology and equipment. This includes digital projection, analog and digital video signal routing, inflatable and folding projection screens, and sound reinforcement.
+ Ability to lift and carry 60 lbs.
+ Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
+ Adaptable to a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends.
+ Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve, and remain flexible under pressure.
+ A valid driver's license and clean driving record is strongly preferred, as is a willingness to drive cargo vans, 16', and 21' box trucks.
+ Extensive experience setting up speaker systems, running FOH/monitor mixes, operating digital mixing consoles or digital projectors, though not necessary, is a strong advantage over other applicants.
+ Willingness to play a fluid role as part of a small, tight-knit team, balancing professionalism and a great sense of humor.

Print Traffic Coordinator

Print Traffic Coordinator will be responsible for, but not limited to: masters / mape traffic management, building show programs and coordinating filmmmaker travel and accommodation. The position begins on April 28th, and would be a 30 to 40 hour per week position from the end of April to about mid-August, possibly longer. Pay is $15/hr, and hours are somewhat flexible, though we would require that the employee commit to no less than 30 hours a week. Applicants should be prepared to commute Monday-Friday to our offices in Gowanus/Park Slope.

Responsibilities would include:

+Masters / Tape Traffic Management: keep track of all master formats of films that are being screened.
+Coordinate with filmmakers on how to get their master files in time for screening.
+Manage shipping/receiving master tapes via Fed Ex and Post Office.
+Organize Logo Screen for pre-show logo loops
+Hiring editor interns and prepare them for the show edits.
+Supervise edits of each show's program, checking for technical issues.
+Booking flights and accommodations for filmmakers.
+Other summer series related tasks (time permitting).

+Detail oriented, organized and thorough.
+Comfortable dealing with deadlines.
+Very comfortable editing with Final Cut Pro (ideally editing assistant level).
+Very comfortable with Microsoft Office (particularly excel).
+Reasonably comfortable with Photoshop.

Rooftop Films is seeking interns for Summer 2014. Rooftop Films is a non-profit film festival that has been screening films outdoors since 1997. All of our screenings feature new, independently-produced films from around the world, and the shows take place on rooftops and in other scenic locations all over New York. While interning with Rooftop, interns will get first-hand experience with every facet of running a film festival and arts/non-profit management. A great opportunity for film, arts administration and nonprofit management students as well as young filmmakers: learn how a nonprofit film festival works and see hundreds of great movies. Internships are not paid, but can be done for school credit. Find out your school’s internship or field work credit requirements and we will work with you to accommodate them.

Our offices are on the border of Park Slope and Gowanus, near the R, F and G trains in Brooklyn, so please apply only if you will be able to handle that commute. We welcome graduate students and applicants finishing their 1st year of college (or age equivalent) or older.

FESTIVAL INTERNSHIP (4 positions available):
Help with all aspects of planning and managing a film festival.

Internship tasks include:

+ Organizing film screenings (including in office prep, on-site show setup, production and breakdown)
+ Organizing volunteers
+ Managing the box office and merchandise sales
+ Marketing, research, promotions and community outreach
+ Pre-screening programs of films
+ Contacting, corresponding and hosting filmmakers
+ Contacting the press and promoting the screenings
+ Writing press releases, blog posts and social network website updates
+ Organizing and maintaining film databases
+ Organizing tape library
+ Fundraising and development
+ Audio and video tech work
+ General office and festival work
+ Anything else you might be interested in — we want you to see how we work

Candidates should have good experience working with Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and experience with Filemaker, HTML, design programs or video editing software is a plus.

Festival Internship candidates would be expected to average at least two days a week in the office and one evening show per week, but generally the more time you can commit the better.

VIDEO PRODUCTION INTERNSHIP (2 position available):
Rooftop Films seeks organized, detail-oriented Video Production Interns to assist with editing of show content and other video related tasks during the 2014 Rooftop Films Summer Series.

Internship tasks include:
+ Shooting Q+A’s, musical performances and interviews
+ Editing short videos for the web
+ Assisting with filmmaker relations, correspondence and print traffic (coordination of film master delivery)
+ Assisting with audio editing for Rooftop's Podcast
+ Organizing media library
+ General office and festival work

The candidate should have:
+ Final Cut Pro editing experience
+ Photoshop experience
+ Comfort in capturing/ripping/converting footage (from DVD, Bluray, mini dv and various HD formats)
+ Interest in and eagerness to learn the technical aspects of video and graphic design
+ Proficiency with Macs and Quicktime video
+ Media management skills/ability to track and organize high volume workflow
+ Knowledge of DVD authoring (DVD Studio Pro / iDVD) is a plus

Rooftop Films Rooftop Films Summer Volunteers

As a non-profit arts organization, Rooftop Films depends on volunteers like you for its growth and success. Working with Rooftop is a great opportunity to see fantastic films and live music, find out about the inner workings of film festivals, and meet the Rooftop staff and the filmmakers.

Rooftop will need volunteers for over 40 shows summer 2014, all of which will be outdoors between May and August. Most shows are on Friday or Saturday nights, with some special shows on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Volunteers can help out at as many or as few shows as they are available for.
