Romantic short films about the unusual nature of love in the modern world

Is love just a series of chemical reactions in our brain, something that could be scanned and measured? Can love happen in a virtual world, where the two participants can never touch? Is that any different from a restrictive society, where couples are not allowed physical contact? Sometimes the most romantic moments are the uncommon ones, times when outlandish circumstances strain the relationship, when participants are pushed into uncomfortable situations, when the very form of our emotional experiences is called achingly into question. This program of sexy and strange short films is filled with unexpected love stories that will tug at your emotions, and get your heart racing.

Sweet Stream Love's River (Carl Skelton and Luke DuBois | Brooklyn, NY)
Developed by multimedia artists Carl Skelton and R. Luke DuBois, Sweet Stream Love’s River displays words of love, glowing in the rippling surface of a real-time animation of a virtual pool of water. Audience members are invited to share their own warm-to-hot feelings by sms from their smartphone directly to the screen. As one message dissipates, the next appears. Presented by AT&T.

THE LOVE COMPETITION (Brent Hoff | USA | 15 min.)
The Stanford MRI Lab hosts the world’s first ever love competition, in which seven contestants have five minutes to neurochemically love someone as hard as they can.

XOXOSMS (Nancy Schwartzman | USA | 13 min.)
A modern day love documentary about a home-schooled Christian boy from small-town Illinois who takes a chance and Facebook messages Jiyun, a beautiful NYC art student from Korea.

JENNY (Ingvild Soderlind | USA | 14 min.)
A visually bold piece of suburban surrealism in which a lonely teen who is ostracized from the animalistic sexuality of her peers finds entry to their rituals.

BLIK (Bastiaan Schravendeel | USA | 8 min.)
A little boy with a playful crush on his teenage neighbor. The faceless, unspeaking animated characters prove the emotional power of reading between the lines.

CAFÉ REGULAR (Ritesh Batra | Egypt | 10 min.)
A simple conversation unearths troves of meaning as cultural taboos test a budding relationship in a crowded café in Cairo.

RANDOM STRANGERS (Alexis Dos Santos | USA | 27 min.)
Rocky and Lulu bump into each other on and create a place where they can truly be themselves. But how real is their world, and their relationship?

Burt Talks to the Bees (Isabella Rossellini | USA | 2 min.)
Meet the bees—the queen, the workers and the drones—in this wonderfully fantastic and wildly educational series of short films created by Isabella Rossellini, actress, director and uncanny Burt impersonator. Once you meet them, you’ll want to save them too. Visit to see how.
