THE FILMS

Sweet Stream Love's River (Carl Skelton and Luke DuBois | Brooklyn, NY)
Developed by multimedia artists Carl Skelton and R. Luke DuBois, Sweet Stream Love’s River displays words of love, glowing in the rippling surface of a real-time animation of a virtual pool of water. Audience members are invited to share their own warm-to-hot feelings by sms from their smartphone directly to the screen. As one message dissipates, the next appears. Presented by AT&T.

Wonder Why

A Man Named Magick (Joaquin Perez and Robert Hatch-Miller | Brooklyn, NY | 12 min.)
Meet Magick Balay, who runs a midtown Manhattan magic shop by day, and at night performs his own legerdemain at clubs and private parties. A close-up portrait of a charismatic guy whose greatest feat is how he has transformed himself through his art.

ODYSSEUS’ GAMBIT (Alex Lora | USA | 13 min.)
A gambit is a chess opening in which a player sacrifices a pawn with the hope of achieving a resulting advantageous position. The film follows Saravuth Inn, a Cambodian-American chess player who sacrifices himself in the hopes of finding a better position on the board of life.

THE BEST THING I EVER DONE (Margaret Emily MacKenzie | USA | 16 min.)
Hailed as the “godfather of Brooklyn pizza,” for forty five years Domenico DeMarco, Italian émigré and father of seven, has been slinging pizzas in his legendary corner shop, Di Fara. An endearing ode to pizzaioli who take their time to 'make it right.'

Sunday's At Rocco's (Rauch Bros | New York, NY | 3 min.)
Nicholas Petron remembers family dinners at his grandfather's place and how everything changed when the city made new plans for their neighborhood.

The Despers (Iva Radivojevic and Sarah Enid Hagey | USA | 4 min.)
Kick off this celebration of NY summer with the floating trance-like harmonies of a steel drum orchestra, gathering in panyards across Brooklyn to gear up for the annual Steel Band Panorama Competition.

THE BLACK BALLOON (Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie | 35 min.)
While trying to move 40 kids six New York City blocks all by himself, a stressed man accidentally loses a bouquet of a hundred balloons. In that bouquet, a lone black balloon scurries free from the rest. It dies and comes back to life, returning to the city, cruising for a companion. On its beat, it learns that humans are complicated creatures with extreme highs and lows, but full of life nonetheless. A film intended to be for children that turned into a sci-fi urban fable, this is the story of The Black Balloon Written by Josh and Benny Safdie.

SOLO PIANO – NYC (Anthony Sherin | USA | 5 min.)
On a cold winter morning, a lone piano stands curbside in New York City. Passersby slow, stop, and play. Plinking slightly out-of-tune over the white noise of Broadway’s cars, buses, trucks, and sirens, the piano awaits its fate. A plaintive reminder to never pass up a unique opportunity in NYC.

I AM JOHN WAYNE (Christina Choe | 17 min.)

WALT DISNEY’S TAXI DRIVER (Bryan Boyce | 5 min.)
Where would Travis Bickle fit in with the Disney-fied New York City?

Burt Talks to the Bees (Isabella Rossellini | USA | 2 min.)
Meet the bees—the queen, the workers and the drones—in this wonderfully fantastic and wildly educational series of short films created by Isabella Rossellini, actress, director and uncanny Burt impersonator. Once you meet them, you’ll want to save them too. Visit www.wildforbees.com to see how.
