Looking for companionship, animated foxes, Queens con artists, and drunken babies all wind up in comically awkward and poignantly tragic circumstances.

Everybody needs somebody. You need your roommate to make fun of you if the hat you’re wearing is wrong for your date. You need your boxing buddy to pull a gun on your girlfriend if she sneaks into the apartment unannounced. You need that yoghurt focus group guy to pay your suicidal friend so he can buy his daughter a birthday present for her 4th birthday…or was it her 8th birthday?

So off we go: a fox leaving coded notes for the bunny down the hall. A father returning from prison on his best behavior. And an awkward old lady out to the beach to party, in the celebrated US premiere of the complete version of Johannes Nyholm’s drunken baby YouTube sensation Las Palmas, produced in part by the Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund. Nyholm will be at the show in person from Sweden to answer for a Q&A after the film.

Once again, Rooftop is thrilled to partner with our friends (really!) at the Swedish Film Institute for a cross-cultural program about the joys and perils of friendship. Join us, buddy!

THE FILMS

Tord & Tord (Niki Lindroth von Bahr | Sweden | 11 min.)
Tord accidentally walks into the apartment next to his and discovers that Tord lives there, too. An adorable, animated, post-modern fable.

Andy & Zach (Nick Paley | New York, NY | 10 min.)
In this wry comedy starring actual ex-roommates (and Office cast members), when Zach decides to move out, Andy tries to set up a new life without his best friend. nickpaley.com

John's Gone (Josh and Benny Safdie | New York, NY | 22 min.)
John sells things online, cheats off dollar stores, needs friends but settles for strangers, has roaches. John is punch drunk, not with love but with something far more strange and lost. In this fever dream comedy, one can only say John’s Gone. redbucketfilms.com

Peter's Room (Nicolas Kolovos | Sweden | 3 min.)
Young Peter lies in bed, pretending to be asleep. His parents are worried that he’s become too attached.

Yoghurt (Sanna Lenken | Sweden | 29 min.)
Six strangers are sitting in a conference room. They’re in a focus group, but how much is there really to say about yoghurt? There’s so much more to discover about each other.

Cross Your Heart (Michael Wood | Brooklyn, NY | 11 min.)
After serving 3 years in prison, Andre returns to the home of his ex-girlfriend, Sheila. Hoping to rekindle their relationship and re-connect with the 5 year-old daughter they share, Andre fights to gain the trust of his fractured family.

Las Palmas (Johannes Nyholm | Sweden | 14 min.)
A middle-aged lady on a holiday in the sun tries to make new friends and have a good time. The role is played by a one-year-old girl (Johannes’ daughter); the rest of the cast are marionette puppets. The trailer received over 8 million views on YouTube. Here now is the US premiere of the complete version of Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund grantee Johannes Nyholm’s legendary short film. johannesnyholm.se

MUSIC

Birdlips
“Guitarist Cliff Usher and keyboardist Lindsay Pitts have embodied the very essence of a beachy, Brazilian bossa-nova and tweaked it with their own eerie, Americana twist. Their single one in seven is one such saucy sample of Birdlips' cool, modern take on the classic 60's Rio sound. ... all the while Pitt's off-hand, airy vocals belie haunting lyrics such as “they say the dark will take us all, it's a sign of the times” that would send shivers up the spine of Prince himself. Though it harkens a lazy day at the beach, one in seven is more seaside at dusk, when you suddenly realize that slight sunburn you have is now giving you goose bumps, and you pull on a cozy wrap as you inch closer to the bonfire.” - Miss Dolly Mod, My Old Kentucky Blog
