Sondra Sun-Odeon (Brooklyn via California desert via Shangri-La)
“Sondra Sun-Odeon sings as if reading ancient chants straight out of the Cosmonomicon…” -TimeOutNY
“Sondra Sun-Odeon’s trembling voice calls to mind Karen Dalton and Grace Slick….." -Flavorpill
The only music Sun-Odeon was exposed to while growing up in an austere family with no radio or stereo, was the theatrical Chinese (Peking) Opera (via her parents’ regular viewing of Chinese opera movies) and the classical music she learned (via piano and violin lessons). A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, she would tape classical music pieces off the radio and sneak a hand held transistor radio into bed to listen to beneath the covers.
The world that Sun-Odeon’s lyrics live in, is highly romantic, full of longing and desire; sometimes in different languages–sometimes invented–and often inspired by everything from Chinese cult-fantasy films to metaphysical/spiritual journeys to communion with Life, Love, and Death.
Sun-Odeon sings/plays guitar, saz and other instruments in Brooklyn-based band, SILVER SUMMIT (whose debut album was released on Language of Stone/Drag City).
