The Commercials of Harry Egipt (Harry Egipt | Estonia | 6 min.)
Perhaps nothing communicates the off-beat world of Soviet-era Estonian television quite as well as the commercials of Harry Egipt, so brace yourself for a spellbinding collection of some of the wildest commercials to ever grace the small screen.
These commercials have made it's director and copywriter Harry Egipt famous all around the world. Now you can get the unique DVD anthology with all his films from /www.timeless.ee
The first commercials were produced in Estonia in 1967. Estonian Commercial Film Producers, the company that produced more than 300 short films or commercials per year in its most prolific period, was a major Soviet commercials producer. Most of the commercials made over the decades by the company have, however, been destroyed, except for the films directed by Harry Egipt, nearly 90 in total.
For the most part Harry Egipt's film projects can be considered a one man show, since he was the author, director and the producer of the commercials. He also did the casting himself and hand-picked the crew. His work is characterized by an utterly unique, so-called "Egiptean-style",which uses innovative ideas, fast editing, original music and gorgeous models.
Harry Egipt's commercials are characterized by a positive attitude -- they do not try to praise the product by putting down competing products, and therefore the viewer does not get the feeling of being manipulated. The films have proved that they are timeless -- there was a lot of interest in them during the Soviet time which remains to this day. These films were remarkable even when they were made and were considered to be ahead of their time.
