Natureboy is the musical project of Sara Kermanshahi, a first generation American of Iranian descent. Sara created Natureboy upon moving to Brooklyn, NY in 2007. She is a former member of Seattle's critically acclaimed House on A Hill, a musical collaboration with Cedar Apffel. Cedar produced her debut and now plays in Natureboy's backing band, along with musician/producer Rory O'Connor (Masterface).
Natureboy will appeal to fans of groups like Bon Iver, Beach House, Cat Power, and Mazzy Star. She weaves modern loops & samples with acoustic folk to create a haunting synthesis of moody and intelligent, melodic and angular music. Her lyrics are both starkly emotional and strangely evocative, drawing the listener into a strange and resonant world that persists long after the music is over.
Natureboy's live performances are as captivating as her music. Onstage, Sara closes her eyes, curls up her toes, and gives herself completely over to the audience. What emerges is gorgeous, vulnerable, and almost threatening. Her band backs up her sound with tastefully-woven waves of guitar, synth, bass and drums, adding to the power of her unique, natural vocal style and skillful guitar playing.
Natureboy is quickly gaining a fan base of loyal and excited listeners on both coasts. She's been playing a steady stream of gigs in Brooklyn since the release of her independent self-titled album. Past shows have been held at venues such as Union Pool, The Middle East (Boston), and The Delancey in the East Village for the CMJ Music Marathon. She has shared the stage with Magnolia Electric Co., Sharon Van Etten and Kelli Scarr. Her music has appeared in Esopus magazine, on KEXP, on RCRD LBL and was recorded live by NYC Taper, and the debut album is featured on many best of 2009 lists including Kevchino.com, The Sky Report, Musicology NYC, and singer songwriter Sharon Van Etten picked it as her third favorite record of 2009.
"#3 album of 2009 -- Her arrangements are STUNNING and her songwriting is classic. Gets stuck in my head every time. And Sarah's voice reminds me of Betty Serveert which was one of my favorite bands in high school -- so I get SUPER reminiscent." --Sharon Van Etten
"Natureboy: November 7, 2009 Union Pool Brooklyn -- Sara Kermanshahi is a singer-songwriter of immense talents. I expect we'll hear a lot from her in 2010. On this particular night, she shined with such intensity that we were literally moved to emotion-- and in particular by her cover of Nico's 'I'll Keep It With Mine.'" -- NYCTaper
"Each song is a bittersweet slice of longing, laced with Sara's ethereal and wholly unique vocal delivery (it's hard to think of another artist who sounds quite like her), and the atmospheric instrumentation of her backing band (Cedar Apffel and Rory O'Conner)." -- RCRD LBL
"Natureboy blew my mind this year. I don't think I've spent more personal, alone time with any other record this year." -- The Sky Report "Anyone with half a soul could get swept up in Kermanshahi's abstract world. She compels the listener to draw closer. " -- Kevchino.com
