The 2015 Rooftop Filmmakers Fund is now closed for submissions. Applications will be notified in early December 2015.

The Goal:

The goal of the Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund is to help our filmmakers make creative, intelligent, low-budget films. Since Rooftop Films inception in 1997, the mission of the organization has been to support an independent filmmaking community, and to help filmmakers at all stages of the process, from production to exhibition.

Who is eligible:

Any director who has ever screened a film at Rooftop Films may apply. Producers and other collaborators may apply, but only if the director (or co-director) of the film for which you are applying is a Rooftop alumni. Please note that onlythese filmmakers may apply for funding.   If you have NOT screened a film in our festival, you are NOT eligible. If you have questions regarding your eligibility, please email Rooftop Films Artistic Director Mark Elijah Rosenberg at filmfund [at] rooftopfilms [dot] com or call 718-417-7362 before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply with more than one project?
Yes. Keep in mind, the panel wants to know that with any film we are considering supporting that the filmmaker is completely committed to making the film and will stop at nothing to get it made. If you have more than one project going at once, you need to convince us that each film will in fact get made. The more films you are juggling, the less likely it seems that any one film will get made.

Can I apply again with the same film if I didn't receive funding the previous year, or if I did receive funding?
Yes and yes. We love to see people stick to their projects, and understand that it can take years to make a film, through many changes and ups and downs. Many of the films we have funded were films that had applied in multiple years.

I was the producer or writer on a film that screened at Rooftop. Am I eligible to apply?
No. Only directors who had their work screened are eligible to apply as directors. We appreciate that film is a collaborative medium, and respect the contributions of all the collaborators, but with over 2,500 directors who have now screened at Rooftop Films, we must limit the grant eligibility to that pool. In this way, we can more clearly judge the director's vision for the new film.

I am the producer but not the director for an upcoming film. Am I eligible to apply?
No. Alumni filmmakers can only apply for films that they are directing or co-directing.

I do not know when my upcoming film will be completed. Can I still apply?
Yes. But we are more likely to award grants to films that have a relatively well-set timeline for production.

I have been awarded a Rooftop grant in the past. Can I still apply for another grant?
Yes and yes. Many of the films we have funded were films that had applied in multiple years.

Where is the application form to apply for short film grants? For feature film grants?
We are no longer accepting applications for 2015.

The Process:
The Rooftop Filmmakers' Fund has nine grants available:

+ The Rooftop Filmmakers' Fund Short Film Grant.
+ The Rooftop Films / DCTV Short Film Equipment & Services Grant.
+ The Rooftop Films / Adrienne Shelly Foundation Short Film Grant for Women.

+ The Rooftop Films & Eastern Effects Equipment Grant.
+ The Rooftop Films & Edgeworx VFX / Titles / Animation Grant.
